The weather forecast was right: rain, and lots of it. I set off, in
driving rain, after an enormous breakfast, wrapped up in waterproof
gear, at 8 o'clock. When I arrived in Carrbridge the previous evening
the temperature was 26 degrees, this morning a mere 10 deg., so within
the shortest time my fingers were suffering from the cold. I decided to
get to Inverness ASAP and buy some gloves. Inverness however, was still
some 20 miles away with a climb up to the Slochd Summit, and by the time
I got there some of my fingers were numb from the cold. I found
Halfords, bought some posh waterproof gloves and went on my way heading
North over the Kessock Bridge towards Dingwall. Luckily by lunchtime the
rain stopped which was a relief. The route followed NCN route 1,
parallel with the busy A9 over the Moray Firth ending at my overnight
stop in Golspie. All the Golspie pubs looked slightly suspicious, as did
the eateries (apart from the fish and chip shop), so I went to the
supermarket and bought a salad..... Tomorrow I plan an early getaway as
the terrein is quite hilly and after John o'Groats have to cycle the 20
miles to my hotel in Thurso.
